Jane was born in 1537 to Henry Grey, Duke of Suffolk, and Frances Brandon, the niece of King Henry VIII. She was a precocious child, and she was well-educated in the classics, history, and religion. When she was 15 years old, she was married to Guilford Dudley, the son of the Duke of Northumberland. The marriage was arranged by Northumberland, who was hoping to use Jane as a pawn in his power struggle with the Duke of Somerset.

In 1553, King Edward VI died without naming an heir to the throne. Northumberland seized the opportunity to have Jane proclaimed queen. However, Jane's reign was short-lived. Mary Tudor, the half-sister of Edward VI, was the rightful heir to the throne, and she quickly raised an army to challenge Jane's claim. Jane was defeated and imprisoned in the Tower of London. She was executed on 12 February 1554, at the age of 16.

The authors do a good job of bringing Jane's character to life, and they provide a detailed and accurate portrayal of the events of her life.
