When Muhammad died in 632 CE, Umar was one of the candidates to succeed him as caliph. However, he initially supported Abu Bakr, the first caliph. After Abu Bakr's death in 634 CE, Umar was elected caliph by the Muslim community.

As caliph, Umar continued Abu Bakr's policies of expansion. He led the Muslim armies to conquer Syria, Egypt, and Persia. He also established a system of administration for the new territories.

Umar was a just and wise ruler. He was known for his piety and his love of justice. He also had a strong sense of humor. One of his most famous sayings was, "If I were to be given a piece of gold the size of Mount Uhud, I would not spend it all on myself until I had distributed it all to the poor."

Umar was assassinated by a Persian slave in 644 CE. He was succeeded by Uthman ibn Affan, the third caliph of the Rashidun Caliphate.
