The Old Testament tabernacle and temple were more than just physical structures; they were also rich in symbolism, pointing to the person and work of Jesus Christ. The high priest's garments, the layout of the tabernacle, and the temple all foreshadowed Christ's role as our mediator, sacrifice, and intercessor.

The High Priest's Garments

The high priest's garments were carefully designed to symbolize his role as mediator between God and man. The linen robe represented purity and righteousness. The blue sash represented heaven, where God dwells. The ephod, a sleeveless tunic, represented the priest's authority to intercede for the people. The breastplate, with its twelve precious stones, represented the twelve tribes of Israel, whom the priest bore before God. The turban, with its gold plate inscribed "Holiness to the Lord," represented the priest's consecration to God's service.

The Layout Of The Tabernacle

The tabernacle was a portable sanctuary where God met with His people. It was divided into two main sections: the Holy Place and the Most Holy Place. The Holy Place contained the altar of incense, the table of showbread, and the lampstand. The Most Holy Place contained the ark of the covenant, which represented God's presence among His people. The tabernacle was a foreshadowing of Christ's body: the Holy Place represented His humanity, and the Most Holy Place represented His divinity.

The Temple

The temple, which replaced the tabernacle, was a permanent structure built by Solomon. It was more elaborate and magnificent than the tabernacle, but it served the same purpose: to provide a place where God could meet with His people. The temple was divided into three main sections: the Outer Court, the Inner Court, and the Most Holy Place. The Outer Court was where the people gathered to worship and offer sacrifices. The Inner Court was where the priests ministered. The Most Holy Place contained the ark of the covenant, which was now covered by a veil. The temple was a foreshadowing of Christ's body: the Outer Court represented His earthly ministry, the Inner Court represented His priestly ministry, and the Most Holy Place represented His heavenly ministry.

Christ As Our High Priest

Jesus Christ is the fulfillment of the Old Testament high priest. He is our mediator between God and man, our sacrifice for sin, and our intercessor before the Father. His garments are not made of linen, blue, or gold, but of His own righteousness. His breastplate bears not the names of the twelve tribes of Israel, but the names of all who believe in Him. His turban is not inscribed "Holiness to the Lord," but "King of Kings and Lord of Lords."

Jesus Christ is the true tabernacle and temple. In Him, God meets with His people. In Him, we find forgiveness of sins, peace with God, and eternal life. He is our way, our truth, and our life.

In Christ, we have the fulfillment of all that was foreshadowed in the Old Testament. He is our High Priest, our Tabernacle, and our Temple. In Him, we find salvation and eternal life.
