These moments can be incredibly satisfying, but they can also be frustrating. Why couldn't we have understood it sooner? Why did we have to struggle for so long?

The truth is, there are a few reasons why things often seem more obvious in hindsight.

1. Confirmation bias

Confirmation bias is the tendency to seek out information that confirms our existing beliefs. This means that we are more likely to notice and remember evidence that supports our views, while ignoring or downplaying evidence that contradicts them.

When we are trying to understand something new, confirmation bias can make it difficult to see the whole picture. We may become so focused on finding evidence that supports our existing beliefs that we miss other important information.

2. Hindsight bias

Hindsight bias is the tendency to believe that we could have predicted an event after it has already happened. This is because we can now see all of the information that led up to the event, and it seems obvious that it could not have happened any other way.

However, when we are actually in the moment, we do not have all of this information. We can only make decisions based on the information that we have at the time. This means that we may make mistakes, but it does not mean that we are not intelligent or capable.

3. Overconfidence

Overconfidence is the tendency to believe that we know more than we actually do. This can lead us to make mistakes, because we are not aware of our own limitations.

When we are trying to understand something new, overconfidence can make it difficult to learn. We may think that we already know everything, so we do not bother to seek out new information. This can lead us to miss important details and misunderstandings.

How to overcome these biases

The first step to overcoming these biases is to be aware of them. Once we know that we are susceptible to these biases, we can take steps to avoid them.

Here are a few tips:

  • Seek out information that contradicts your existing beliefs.
  • Be aware of your own limitations.
  • Don't be afraid to ask for help.

Overcoming these biases can be difficult, but it is important to remember that everyone is susceptible to them. By being aware of our own biases, we can take steps to avoid them and improve our understanding of the world.

The benefits of understanding

There are many benefits to understanding something. When we understand something, we can:

  • Make better decisions.
  • Communicate more effectively.
  • Be more creative.
  • Cope with stress more effectively.
  • Enjoy life more.

Understanding is not always easy, but it is always worth it. When we take the time to understand something, we are investing in our future.

Everything is obvious once you know the answer. But sometimes, the hardest part is finding the answer. By being aware of our own biases, we can improve our understanding of the world and make better decisions.
