There are three houses, each painted a different color. One house is red, one house is blue, and one house is green. The red house is to the left of the blue house. The green house is to the right of the blue house. Which house is in the middle?

There are four coins on a table. One of the coins is fake and weighs less than the other coins. You have a balance scale. How can you find the fake coin using the balance scale only twice?

Solution:

1. Place two coins on each side of the balance scale. If the scale is balanced, then the fake coin is one of the two coins that are not on the scale. If the scale is not balanced, then the fake coin is on the side of the scale that is lighter.
2. Place the two coins that are not on the scale on the balance scale. The fake coin will be the coin that is lighter.

Puzzle 4

There are 100 people in a room. Each person has a different hat, either black or white. The people can see the hats of everyone else in the room, but they cannot see their own hat. The people take turns guessing the color of their own hat. If a person guesses correctly, they leave the room. If a person guesses incorrectly, they stay in the room. The last person left in the room is the only person who guessed the color of their own hat correctly. How many people guessed the color of their own hat correctly?

Solution: 99 people guessed the color of their own hat correctly.

Puzzle 5

There is a 4x4 grid of squares. Each square is either black or white. The grid has the following properties:

• Each row has an even number of black squares.
• Each column has an even number of black squares.

How many black squares are there in the grid?

Solution: 8 black squares
